About the event
Having welcomed Rev’d Canon Dr Howard Mellor and Stuart Bell to our annual Samuel Chadwick Lectures for the years 2018 and 2019 respectively, we are pleased to announce that the Samuel Chadwick Lecturer for 2020 will be our very own Principal, Rev Ashley Cooper. He will be speaking to the theme of the Holy Spirit and church growth, drawing upon his years of experience at the thriving and growing Swanbank Methodist Church in Stoke-on-Trent. The lecture will be followed by a response from PhD student Gareth Higgs.
In line with previous years, the date will be the date of Chadwick’s death: 16 October, starting at 11am and finishing by 1pm. This year the whole event will be held online. Attendance is free but booking is required - please register for the event by filling in your details below.
About the Samuel Chadwick Centre
The Samuel Chadwick Centre was inaugurated at the 2018 Cliff Festival by Dr Ben Pugh and Rev’d Dr George Bailey, and was the first of Cliff College’s research centres. The founding vision of the Samuel Chadwick Centre was to bring together and disseminate, for the benefit of the wider church, the insights of both Methodism and Pentecostalism in the matter of the Holy Spirit’s role in evangelism and mission. Samuel Chadwick, Cliff College's most famous principal, was, we believe, a shining example of both these things. A devout Wesleyan, he embraced the new Pentecostalism at a time when most were shunning it, and his whole life was a living example of Spirit-filled and Spirit-led evangelism, as exemplified in his widely read, The Way to Pentecost.
