About this unit

Foundations: Ministry in the Methodist Tradition introduces students to the historical development of Methodist ministries and enables students to identify distinctive characteristics of ministry in the Methodist tradition today. Usually taught online, this unit will be offered in summer 2025 as a residential three-day intensive course. Based on the Cliff College campus in Derbyshire, you'll be learning alongside others from around the country in a community of worship and prayer. This is a residential course, with accommodation and food included in the cost of £400.

The Ministry in the Methodist tradition complemented other study I've done on church history. I found the section on Susanna Wesley particularly interesting, especially in relation to how she supported the development of Local Preachers.

Foundations units and assessments

Foundations units are designed for to equip you for mission and ministry in the 21st century. They are normally taken online as ten-week units, with assessed work submitted following the unit. Students who successfully complete the unit and the assessed work are awarded 10 credits at Level 4, which can be transferred into the BA Theology and Mission programme at Cliff College or into other undergraduate degree programmes.

For this on-campus intensive unit, students wishing to submit assessed work and obtain the Level 4 credits will need to submit their work by Wednesday 10 September 2025. Students not wishing to obtain academic credit for this unit will not be required to submit assessed work.

This unit was a great opportunity for me to learn about small groups in the Methodist tradition - with this knowledge, I've been able to establish and strengthen a series of class meetings in one of the Methodist circuits in Uganda, where I live.
