Certificate in Family Ministry

Designed for family work practitioners within the church and the community, the short course Certificate in Family Ministry is a week-long course in this growing area of ministry. We are excited to be working in partnership with the Methodist Learning Network and Bible Reading Fellowship in the delivery of the course. This course has been full over the last five years we have run the course - so book early!

Family Ministry Certificate

The short course is delivered via lectures and seminars and has practical as well as theoretical applications. The aim is to enable family workers to reflect on their practice, learn new skills, and gain greater confidence in their ministry. Subject areas include:

  • biblical and contemporary reflections on the family
  • the importance of family, and ideals surrounding family
  • the seasons, celebrations and significant moments of family life
  • the role of relationships in family life, between families and the Church, and in the community
  • the well-being, wholeness, and health of the family
  • practical approaches to working with families

These subject areas comprise the Core Skills in Family Ministry curriculum. This short course would be ideal for practitioners, those wanting greater knowledge about this area of ministry, and those seeking to resource others in the life of the Church.

Participants gain a Cliff College Certificate by completing the required assessment work following the teaching week. Successful students will be invited to the Cliff College graduation ceremony. Students can choose not to do the assessment work by auditing the short course.

It was all totally invaluable and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Informative, challenging, reflective, resourcing, encouraging, enabling and empowering.

It will be hard to hold me back on things I will do! I need to go back, reflect, pray, discern the next steps. But as a ‘way of doing and being’, it’s been brilliant to take that away.

'This course has already begun to shape family ministry practice across the country as it brings together some of the key threads in this field of mission and ministry. Working with some of the key practitioners and thinkers in this subject, we welcome the opportunity to again work alongside Gail Adcock and other national speakers’
Ian White, short course programme leader, Cliff College

‘This course is an innovative and dynamic response to the changing landscape of family ministry in churches across the UK. It promises to be an invaluable time for all those engaged in ministry with families and gives an opportunity for us to unpack key aspects of our roles and this work.
- Gail Adcock, family ministry development officer, The Methodist Church

‘This course offers valuable time and space for those working in this area to dig deeper, with fun and friendship along the way!’
- Jane Butcher, children and families pioneer, Bible Reading Fellowship

Your Cliff College short course Certificate in Family Ministry may also enable you to gain credit towards a University of Manchester certificate, diploma or degree at Cliff College. Usually, a short course certificate will gain you 10-20 credits towards a validated qualification. It would mean, for instance, that instead of studying 120 credits in the first year of a degree, you only study 100-110. The awarding of credit in this way is not automatic and must be applied for. If you would like further guidance on whether your Cliff College Short Course Certificate may contribute towards a University of Manchester qualification at Cliff College, contact our Academic Director.
