Certificate in Bible Engagement

Everyone needs to learn how to read the Bible! Designed for those seeking a contemporary perspective on reading the Bible, the short course Certificate in Bible Engagement is a week-long course designed to stretch, inform and inspire.

Bible Engagement Certificate

What does it mean to engage with the Bible in the 21st century? What is the nature of the Bible, and how can it be creatively read and used in Christian discipleship and mission? Does the Bible have anything to say to the wider culture? This Cliff College certificate short course is highly recommended for those leading Bible study groups, as well as worship leaders and preachers.

This week-long short course is delivered via lectures and seminars and has practical as well as theoretical applications. Led by Rev Dr. Mike Parsons, with contributions by the Cliff College faculty and expert adjuncts, the aim of the course is to enable new learning with time for personal reflection. The short course seeks to explore contemporary engagement with the Bible and leave the student with new skills and resources.

Subject areas include:

  • What sort of book is the Bible? – inspiration, revelation, and how to read it
  • Where does the Bible fit into our spiritual lives?
  • How do we read the Bible? – different strategies to help
  • How do we use it? The Bible and our personal discipleship
  • The Bible and Christian living in the world – the Bible and making a difference in the world

One of last year's students, Rachel, wrote in the BRF newsletter about her experience of the Certificate in Bible Engagement. You can find her piece here.

Participants gain a Cliff College certificate by completing the required assessment work following the teaching week. Successful students will be invited to the Cliff College graduation ceremony.

The lecturers brought the Bible alive, raised issues I had never considered, and left me wanting to know more.

Stimulating, exciting, sensitive and interesting… everything I had hoped for and more.

The course was very accessible to people of all abilities and knowledge.

An opportunity to explore different reading strategies to enable deeper personal understanding.

‘This course is an important addition to our range of courses and contributes to one of our key areas of historic study here in the college – the Bible. In the 21st century, what does it mean to have an engagement with the Bible that includes understandings of its place and position in the life of a Christian disciple – but also helps to shape the ethics, lifestyle, and actions of the Christian? We are really looking forward to welcoming Mike Parsons again on this important and dynamic course!’
Ian White, short course programme leader, Cliff College.
